Found fire guard, french polish, silver leaf, wooden balls, goache, silverpoint.

50cm x 100cm x 100cm (variable)

‘Guarded (self-portrait)’ centres on a found fire guard. One side is french polished, the other is an unadorned rectangular frame. Around it collect spheres, one decorated with an eye, another covered in silver. Silver: alchemical healing material, but also the matter of both photographs and mirrors. Which is the better record: the drawn eye, the reflection, or the patina of the silver?

This was inspired in a way by the work ‘Portrait of Iris Beerbohm Tree’ by Jacob Epstein.
